Department of Microbiology (DOM)

DOM is one of the National and "211 Project" Key Disciplines, a component of postdoctoral research stations, which offers doctorate and master's degrees to qualified candidates. It is also a member of National Microbiological Laboratory Networks for Public Health Emergency Response, the National Base of Life Science and Biotechnology Education Professional Training Section, and an Open PLA Key Laboratory of Molecular Virology and Immunology.

Head of Discipline

With mentorship for master and doctorate degrees, Prof. Xu Zhikai, is currently heading the department, and honored "Star of National Medical Science and Technology for the Young and Middle-aged", "Silver Star of Science and Technology" by Department of General Logistics, PLA. He is also an Executive Member of Chinese Society for Microbiology, Executive Director of Microbiology Consortium, PLA, Deputy Member of Virology Division, Chinese Medical Association, and Zoonosis Consortium, Chinese Society for Microbiology, Member of Standing Commitee of Microbiology and Immunology Division, Chinese Medical Association, Member of China Pharmacopoeia Committee, Chair of Shaanxi Provincial Society of Microbiology, Executive Members of Shaanxi Provincial Society of Medicine, Shaanxi Provincial Society of Life Sciences, and Executive Director of Microbiology and Immunology Division, Shaanxi Provincial Society of Medicine.

The Faculty

Faculty members include 2 professors, 5 associate professors, 1 senior technician, 8 lecturers, 2 technicians, 1 teaching assistant, 1 technical assistant, and 5 civilian employees. Over 80% of the faculty memebers hold doctorate degrees.

Teaching

DOM now affords Medical Microbiology, Clinical Microbiology, Genomics of Microbes, Bacteriology, Virology, Mycology, Monoclonal Antibody Technology, and Laboratory Techniques for Medical Microbiology and Immunology for graduates and undergraduates, and has published over 30 textbooks and 60 journal papers on pedagogics.

Research

Research interests focus on basic and applied basic work on specific prophylaxis and treatment of important infectious diseases, particularly on HFRS, tuberculosis, hepatitis C, as well as Japanese encephalitis, AIDS, and brucellosis. During the past two decades, DOM has completed and received nearly three scores of grants from Chinese central government, Shaanxi provincial government, and PLA, totally about ¥30 million. In addition, DOM has also won 15 national, PLA or provincial scientific awards. "Injection of Monoclonal Antibody against HFRS Virus" is under application as Class I New Drug for certificate from State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) after completion of Phase III clinical trials. "Laboratory Investigation of Monoclonal Antibody against Epidemic Type B Encephalitis" was elected one of the "Top Ten Chinese Achievements in Science and Technology in 1997".

Talents Training

Since 1980s, 72 doctorate and 84 master's degrees had been bestowed, and 2 postdoctoral positions had been provided. 56 among these degree holders have earned their professorships or chairmanships.
