Department of Orthopaedics

The Department of Orthopaedics of Xijing Hospital is established by Professor Lu Yupu who returned back to China from United States in 1955. It is the Center of Orthopaedics of PLA authorized by General Logistics Department of PLA from 1978, one of the earliest Master, and Ph. Degree authorizing disciplines in China, first Institute of Orthopaedics of PLA authorized by General Logistics Department of PLA in 1988, post-doctoral research station from 1995, Key Construction Discipline of National "211" Project from 1996, one of disciplines of National Drug Clinical Research and Trial Base from 1998, one of disciplines of "Changjiang River Scholarship Prize Project" from 1999, the "Most Valuable" Research Institute of PLA from 2000, and authorized as national Key Discipline and Military Key Laboratory by the Ministry of Education of China in 2001. In 2006, it is established as Xijing Orthopedic Hospital.

Being a famous hospital specialized in orthopaedics with medical care, teaching, and research responsibility, it focuses on war injury, trauma, bone and joint injury, neurovascular injury, and osteochondral engineering in research.

Xijing Orthopaedic Hospital has 230 beds, 165 registered staff members, and covers 10000 m2 in area. The staff members include 11 professors and chief surgeons, 15 associate professors, 1 senior engineer, 1 associate-professor of technician, 1 professor of nursing, 28 lecturers, surgeon-in-charge, nurse-in-charge, and technician-in-charge. Six of the staffs are Ph.D. and M.D. candidate supervisors, and 9 of the staffs are Master candidate supervisors. 90% of the staffs have M.D. and/or Ph.D. degree.

There are five wards subdivided further into 8 sections as joint surgery, trauma, sports injury, micro-surgery, spine surgery, pediatric orthopaedics, hand surgery, and bone tumor. It has its own operative theater, ICU, and Institute of Orthopaedics of PLA, and bone density research laboratory. The equipments value of the hospital is over 20 million RMB Yuan.

   240 Master students and 91 Ph. D. and/or M.D. students have finished their training program in the hospital. The hospital has joint Ph.D. training program with Tsing Hua University, Sichuan Union University , Hong Kong Chinese University. Six post-doctors fellows have finished programs in the hospital’s post-doctoral research station. From 1996, 49 staffs have been abroad for academic visiting and fellowship training, and 250 person-times of 46 series have visited the hospital academically. Distinguished professors from abroad such as previous Chairman of American Orthopaedic Association, and members of Royal Medical Association of United Kingdom have been invited as visiting professors in the hospitals.

 

There are over 70 research funds totally valued 15 million RMB Yuan from multi-variety sources such as National “973” Project, National “863” Project, National Natural Science Foundation of China, joint international cooperative research program, and military assigned and key research projects.

The hospital has been awarded 5 of the Second Prize for National Scientific and Technological Progress, 58 of the First Prize of Provincial and Ministerial Scientific and Technological Progress, and 35 of the Second Prize of Provincial and Ministerial Scientific and Technological Progress. In 1950s, it has started the pilot research on repairing the late delayed peripheral nerve injury which had been thought worthless to be repaired internationally. In 1960s, it firstly started muscular strength balance operation to treat congenital clubfoot. In 1970s, 50% ZnCl2 has been creatively applied to the treatment of Giant Cell Tumor (GCT). In 1980s, it was the first in China to have successfully performed the replantation of 10 completely amputated digits, which is also a first in world medical history. In 1990s, its faculty invented the recombinant bone xenograft (RBX) for the treatment of bony defect and nonunion which has been successfully widely applied in clinical practice. The achievement has been reported as one of top 10 medical scientific news in China in 1994.

 

At the beginning of 21st century, the Hospital has moved into the new orthopedic building, with improved environment and layout. The work in clinical care, education and scientific research has been greatly improved, which has formed national top specialties in spine surgery, joint surgery, trauma, and bone tumor. The Hospital strives to provide the highest level of patient care, medical education and research internationally.
